P&G Lawn Maintenance Services

Aeration and Overseeding

As the autumn season draws near, it's crucial to ensure that your lawn receives the necessary care to maintain its optimal condition. Core aeration emerges as a vital practice during this time, offering a pathway for essential elements like water, nutrients, and oxygen to reach the root zone. By aerating your lawn, you effectively mitigate thatch buildup and alleviate soil compaction, fostering a healthier and more vibrant turf.

In addition to core aeration, incorporating overseeding into your lawn care maintenance regimen proves to be immensely beneficial. Overseeding serves as a solution to address thin and bare patches while also introducing new and improved grass varieties to your existing turf. This proactive measure not only helps to thicken the lawn's coverage but also enhances its resilience against environmental stressors, ensuring a lush and resilient lawn that can withstand the challenges of the upcoming season.

By combining core aeration with overseeding, you're taking proactive steps to fortify the health and appearance of your lawn as autumn approaches. These practices not only promote better root development and nutrient absorption but also contribute to a thicker, greener lawn that enhances the overall curb appeal of your property. Embrace these essential lawn care techniques to ensure that your outdoor space remains vibrant and inviting throughout the fall season and beyond.

Watering After an Aeration & Seeding

First and second week after your aeration: Shallow, daily watering. Water daily and if possible, two times per day – once in the morning and once in the late afternoon.  The main goal is to keep the seed wet. If you have an irrigation system, 10-20 minutes per watering should be adequate depending on your sprinkler output. If using a hose sprinkler, be sure to move the sprinkler to multiple locations in the yard to ensure even and thorough watering or use a multi-valve hose timer with multiple hoses and sprinklers. 10-15  minutes per station should be adequate. Avoid heavy watering during this stage as it can wash the seed away. If the water is puddling, shorten the time per watering.

Third to fourth week after aeration: Water longer but less often. The seed should be germinating by this point. Deep soakings are the objective now, allowing the roots to develop and reach further in the ground before winter and colder weather stunt its development. Decrease watering to 2-3 days a week. Increase your time by 5-10 minutes per watering. Only skip your watering schedule after a rainfall if it was a deep soaking rain (1/2”–1”).

Other Notes:

  • Fescue can take twenty one (21) days to germinate.
  • Don’t mow your lawn for about two weeks after your aeration. New grass is tender and tends to pluck out rather than cut if mowed too soon.
  • If we maintain your lawn, we will skip mowing for about two weeks to allow the newly seeded grass a chance to germinate and take hold before putting any stress on it. We will still visit weekly to edge and check on the seed’s progress.
  • It is our policy that if a rogue storm washes the seed away, we will perform the service again at cost.
